ORED committed to helping faculty develop proposals

I hope you were able to attend or watch the fall General Faculty meeting last week. President Mark Keenum provided an excellent overview of where we are as a university, including details about many of our significant research initiatives. In case you missed it, the video is online at www.facultysenate.msstate.edu/broadcasts via a link in the lower portion of the webpage.

Please let me take a few minutes to give you an update from the Office of Research and Economic Development.

A few changes
I am continually looking at how we can better assist faculty in developing more competitive proposals for funding opportunities. As part of that ongoing process, I am shifting responsibilities for several members of the ORED leadership team. Drew Hamilton, because of his background and record of successful grantsmanship in security- and defense-related funding, will focus his efforts in developing relationships with the relevant agencies in this arena to explore new opportunities. As a part of this effort, he will be taking a leadership role in the Center for Battlefield Innovation at MSU. Other members of your ORED team will be assuming many of the existing responsibilities that Dr. Hamilton has held. In addition, Teresa Gammill will be working with Katie Echols in our office to develop something we have been discussing for quite some time: a proposal support unit that can assist faculty with every aspect of writing more competitive proposals.

University hosting FAA public meeting Sept. 15
If you would like to learn more about Mississippi State's leading role in the new FAA National Center for Excellence for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, I invite you to join us Sept. 15 for a public meeting where we will discuss opportunities to partner with the center as well as remarks by the FAA's Southern Region Administrator Dennis Roberts. Members of the local community, media, and students, faculty and staff are welcome, and we have details about it posted at http://www.research.msstate.edu/rresources/news.php?id=4337

Research Seminar Series underway
Our newest Research Seminar Series started last month, and we have a number of very important sessions scheduled throughout the semester. The fall lineup delves into fellowships, funding challenges and opportunities, grant management, security, international travel, and much more -- all of it delivered by experts in their fields. Learn more or register at www.research.msstate.edu/workshops.

Responsible Conduct of Research seminar this month
The Office of Research Compliance will present a "Keeping a Lab Notebook" seminar on Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. in the Bost Extension Center theater. The session will be led by Lucy Senter, the director of the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources and university veterinarian, and Kris McCandless, the director of the Office of Technology Management. You may register for this seminar and other RCR training at https://ssl2.msstate.edu/orc/workshops/loginorc.php.

IACUC, Research Compliance hosting conference
Mississippi State's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the Office of Research Compliance, and my office will host a one-day "Shining a Light on Issues Affecting the Animal Care and Use Community" conference on Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hunter Henry Center. The meeting will include four 45-minute presentations, lunch, and a roundtable discussion, and we appreciate the Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research's Regional Connections program providing additional support for the conference. Online registration is available at www.orc.msstate.edu/animalcare/iacuc/annual/registration or contact Trina Smith at tsmith@orc.msstate.edu with questions. Cost per person is $25.

Kudos and congratulations
Every month, I look forward to sharing success stories about our faculty and staff with you, and here are a few that have crossed my desk over the past few weeks:

* Congratulations to Farshid Vahedifard, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, who had a letter published -- "Drought threatens California's levees" -- in the Aug. 21 issue of Science magazine. You may read it at http://www.sciencemag.org/content/349/6250/799.1.full.

* Kudos to Pat Fitzpatrick, an associate research professor with the Geosystems Research Institute, whose work is featured on the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative website at http://gulfresearchinitiative.org/study-reviews-forecast-system-used-during-deepwater-horizon.

* Congratulations to Nitin Sukhija, an assistant research professor with the Distributed Analytics and Security Institute, who has been selected as a National Science Foundation Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) Fellow for the 2015-2016 academic year. Dr. Sukhija will work with the National Institute for Computational Sciences and Oak Ridge National Laboratory on the project, "Designing of Experiments and In-Situ Big Data Analytics for Energy Efficient Buildings."

* Kudos to the faculty, staff and students whose work appears in the article, "International Focus Enhances Mississippi State Opportunities," which was recently published in World Agriculture Outlook 2015. The story is available online at http://issuu.com/faircountmedia/docs/wag15 and begins on page 52.

* Congratulations to K.C. Morrison, professor and head of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, who recently received the 2015 Frank Goodnow Award for Distinguished Service from the American Political Science Association. The award is named in honor of the APSA's first president, and recognizes scholars for career contributions of scholarship, teaching and service.

Final words
Thank you for taking the time to read this month's letter. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns about research and economic development at Mississippi State, please do not hesitate to contact me at dshaw@research.msstate.edu.

Go Dawgs!
