Research focus areas feedback wanted

Mississippi State is our state's leading research university, with research strengths across all colleges and research centers that have led to the institution being the only Mississippi university categorized by the Carnegie Foundation as a very high research activity university.

As we plan for the future, the university must be strategic in the approach we take to future research investments. Based on existing strengths and future opportunities, priority areas have been identified. These research priorities have been discussed among the vice presidents and President Keenum, as well as deans, associate deans, and center directors. Refinements have been made, and the draft priorities are ready for campus-wide review and input. As noted in the MSU Strategic Plan, these priorities will be used in directing investments made in new faculty hires, infrastructure development, and resource allocation.

These priorities will not be to the exclusion of other important academic, research, and service areas on our campus. Rather, they will be used as a factor in decision-making for future investments.

The focus areas and confidential feedback system are now online at https://w.msstate.edu/researchfocusareas/login.php

I strongly urge you to look at them carefully, and to provide feedback via the website. This is an incredibly important step in developing the strategic plan for research, and every comment or suggestion will be seriously considered.

Your review and comments are critical as we move to finalize these research priorities. Please provide your input by Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Vice President for Research and Economic Development
