Google doodle: Happy Birthday, Jules Verne

google_doodle_verne.jpg

Today’s Google doodle gives web surfers the opportunity to dive below the ocean’s surface in a retro-futuristic submarine. Hit the bottom and you’ll discover brightly colored coral filling your submerged windows on the fantastical undersea world. It’s a tip of the hat to Jules Verne and his 183rd birthday.

Verne (1828-1905), the acclaimed writer of the classic, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” and other works of early science fiction, wrote about technology yet to be invented and worlds yet to be discovered in the second half of the 19th Century. His writing paved the way for the popular genre in many ways.

And that raises an interesting question: Does science fiction help or hurt the cause of research, innovation and discovery? It’s something to think about over a second slice of cake.

Happy Birthday, Jules. And thanks, Google.

The nomination period has opened for Mississippi State’s 2011 Research Awards and the Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Award. Employees and students are encouraged to submit nominations for this year’s program.

Research Awards recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the university’s mission of research, as well as honor and reward students, faculty and staff for their accomplishments in research and creative endeavors. The awards also raise awareness of research programs and capabilities on campus.

The Powe Award is reserved for outstanding, nationally recognized, competitive researchers. Nominees should have a distinguished research career and a currently active research program. The award will be reflective of leadership, vision, facilitation, collaboration, problem solving and team building. The Powe honoree receives a gift of $1,500 and a commemorative plaque.

Recipients will be honored at a banquet April 26 at the Colvard Student Union Foster Ballroom.

Complete nomination packets for all awards are due in the Office of Research and Economic Development on or before March 25. Additional information and nomination forms are available for download at http://www.research.msstate.edu/rresources/awards.php

The awards program is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and the Office of the Vice President for Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine.
